Lumpen Proletariat

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
Lumpen Proletariat

declassed strata in an antagonistic society (including vagrants, beggars, and criminal elements). The lumpen proletariat has become particularly widespread under capitalism. It is recruited from various classes and is incapable of organized political struggle. It constitutes, along with the petit bourgeois strata, the social basis of anarchism. The bourgeoisie makes use of the lumpen proletariat as strikebreakers, as participants in fascist pogrom bands, and in other ways. The lumpen proletariat disappears with the abolition of the capitalist system.

WE won't know until the results are announced on Sunday night, of course, but it's my guess that those of us lumpen proletariat who even bothered to vote in the Euro-poll yesterday will have spitefully cast 'protest' votes for the barmy BNP, useless UKIP, Cameron (moral) high-grounders or any of those other lunatic fringe parties we're suddenly so fond of .
Therefore, the criers are not always to be equated with the Lumpen proletariat.
They think we're the lumpen proletariat, too stupid and too thick to be trusted to take or leave TV, unlike the superior Mr Humphrys.
