An effusion of fluid into the alveoli and interstitial spaces of the lungs.

Previous studies have shown that avian viruses preferentially recognize [alpha]-2,3 linkage (SA[alpha]2,3Gal) and bind to type II alveolar cells, which are abundant in the lower respiratory tract of mammals (11,12); these findings support our observations of severe pneumonia with lung edema in the infected dog (Figure 1).
Ammonia, which causes lung edema, also soared to three times the "immediately dangerous to life or health" level.
Over treatment with fluids may cause serious complications such as lung edema, and under treatment may cause another set of complications such as kidney failure.
