Quezon City, city (1990 pop. 1,669,776), former capital of the Republic of the Philippines, central Luzon, a part of the Manila metropolitan area. A suburb of Manila, taken separately it would be the most populous city in the Philippines. It is chiefly residential but has some diversified light industry. , who in 1937 selected this site as the new capital of a free Philippines. It officially replaced Manila as capital in 1948; in 1976 the capital returned to Manila. The area was formerly a private estate. The Univ. of the Philippines is there.

Quezon City

City (pop., 2000: 2,173,831), Luzon Island, Philippines, northeast of Manila. Named for Pres. Manuel Quezon, who selected the site in 1939, it replaced Manila as the capital in 1948. Considered part of metropolitan Manila, it began to grow after World War II with the construction of many government buildings. The seat of government moved back to Manila in 1976. The city is home to two major universities.
