Lunula
a metal crescent-shaped ornament made of bronze, silver, or, less frequently, gold. Lunulae have been known since the end of the Bronze Age. They were common in Egypt as well as among many farming peoples of Europe and Asia and reflected the worship of the moon, which was connected with the cult of fertility. Earrings, pendants, metal details of headdresses, and other ornaments had the form of lunulae. Lunulae were widespread in Rus’ in the tenth to 12th centuries. Crescent-shaped ornaments have been preserved in the folk costumes of certain peoples of India. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
