Lupeni Shooting OF 1929

    0.01 sec.
Lupeni Shooting OF 1929

the bloody suppression of miners’ demonstrations in the settlement of Lupeni on August 5-7 by the Rumanian government, which was controlled by the bourgeois and landlords. Led by Communists, the miners declared a strike, demanding the establishment of a minimum wage and the introduction of the eight-hour day. They occupied a power plant and cut off the electricity to the mines. On August 7 the troops, gendarmes, and police brutally massacred the participants in the strike; by official data, 25 people were killed and about 200 wounded. The Lupeni shooting gave rise to solidarity strikes in Bucharest, Galaţi, Cluj, and elsewhere.
