Lupeni Shooting OF 1929
the bloody suppression of miners’ demonstrations in the settlement of Lupeni on August 5-7 by the Rumanian government, which was controlled by the bourgeois and landlords. Led by Communists, the miners declared a strike, demanding the establishment of a minimum wage and the introduction of the eight-hour day. They occupied a power plant and cut off the electricity to the mines. On August 7 the troops, gendarmes, and police brutally massacred the participants in the strike; by official data, 25 people were killed and about 200 wounded. The Lupeni shooting gave rise to solidarity strikes in Bucharest, Galaţi, Cluj, and elsewhere. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
