Lusis, Ianis Voldemarovich 

(Jānis Voldemāras Lusis). Born May 19, 1939, in Jelgava, Latvian SSR. Soviet athlete (track and field). Honored Master of Sport (1965), officer in the Soviet Army.

Lusis, a javelin thrower, was Olympic champion in 1968, European champion in 1962, 1966, 1969, and 1971, and Soviet champion from 1962 through 1966 and from 1968 through 1972. He was the world record holder from 1968 to 1972. Lusis has been awarded two orders.
