Luton (l`tən), city (1991 pop. 163,209), S central England on the Lea River. The largest city of Bedfordshire, it is administratively independent of the county. Hats, automobiles, ball bearings, and aircraft parts are among the products manufactured. The English millinery industry was established there during the time of James I.

Luton 

a city in Great Britain in Bedfordshire, on the Lea River 50 km north of London. Population, 161,200 (1971). Luton is an important center of the automobile industry; the Vaux-hall plant is located there. Other industries include the manufacture of refrigerating equipment and airplane parts. Hats have long been produced in Luton.
