In western KY, east of Paducah; organized Jan 14, 1854 from Caldwell County. Name Origin: For Chittenden Lyon (1787-1842), U.S. representative from KY (1827-35).

In east-central KS, northeast of Wichita; established as Breckinridge County Feb 17, 1857 (prior to statehood) from Madison County (which was abolished at the time it was divided between Lyon and Greenwood counties); name changed Feb 5, 1862. Name Origin: For Gen. Nathaniel Lyon (1818-61), Union commander in the Civil War who helped preserve MO for the Union when it seemed likely to join the Confederacy.

    On northwestern border of IA; established as Buncombe County Jan 15, 1851 from Woodbury County; name changed Sep 11, 1862. Name Origin: For Gen. Nathaniel Lyon (1818-61), Union commander in the Civil War who helped preserve MO for the Union when it seemed likely to join the Confederacy. He was killed leading the First Iowa Infantry at the Battle of Wilson Creek, MO.
