Lysenko, Mikhail Grigor’evich 

Born Oct. 16(29), 1906, in the village of Shpilevka, in the present-day Sumy Raion, Sumy Oblast; died May 8, 1972, in Kiev. Soviet sculptor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1963). Full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1970). Member of the CPSU (1948).

Lysenko studied at the Khar’kov Art Institute from 1926 to 1931. He began teaching at the Kiev Art Institute in 1944 and became a professor there in 1947. His works include sculptural groups in the Soviet Soldiers’ cemetery—the Hill of Glory—in L’vov (bronze, 1947); the monument to N. A. Shchors in Kiev (in collaboration with others; bronze, 1949-54); the monument to V. I. Lenin in Zaporozh’e (in collaboration with N. M. Sukhodolov; bronze, 1964); the monument to V. P. Zatonskii in Khmel’nitskii (granite, 1969); and a portrait of P. P. Vershigora (organic glass, 1971). Lysenko was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and a number of medals.
