Lyssavirus [′līs·ə‚vī·rəs]
(virology) A genus of the viral family Rhabdoviridae that is characterized by a bullet-shaped enveloped virion covered with projections that contains one molecule of linear, negative-sense, single-stranded ribonucleic acid, the causative agent of rabies. No references found | We identified 2 cases of European bat lyssavirus sub-type 1 transmission to domestic carnivores (cats) in France. Presently, 7 species are recognized within the genus Lyssavirus (order Mononegavirales, family Rhabdoviridae): Rabies virus (RABV), Lagos bat virus (LBV), Mokola virus (MOKV), Duvenhage virus (DUVV), European bat lyssavirus, types 1 and 2, and Australian bat lyssavirus. The genus Lyssavirus is differentiated into 7 genetically divergent genotypes: classical rabies virus (genotype 1), Lagos bat virus (LBV; genotype 2), Mokola virus (MOKV; genotype 3), Duvenhage virus (genotype 4), European bat lyssavirus (genotypes 5 and 6), and Australian bat lyssavirus (genotype 7) (1). |
