Muren
(Mörön), a city in the Mongolian People’s Republic, capital of Khubsugul Province. Population, 8,500 (1963). It is situated at the point where the Muren River is crossed by the Trans-Mongolian Highway. The city has food-processing enterprises (including flour mills), woodworking enterprises, and garment factories; there is also production of building materials. A steam power plant is located near the city. Coal is mined near Muren. Muren (also Delger Muren, Delger Moron), a river in the Mongolian People’s Republic, which, for a short distance, forms part of the border with the Tuva ASSR; a left-bank tributary of the Selenga River. It is 445 km long and drains an area of 26,600 sq km. It rises on the slopes of the Ulan-Taiga Range and then flows chiefly through a deep (150–300 m) valley. The mean flow rate at the mouth is 33 cu m per sec with maximum outflow in June. The Muren River is frozen for four or five months of the year. The river supplies water to the city of Muren.
