Müürisepp, Aleksei 

Born July 4(17), 1902, in the village of Välta, Kingissepa Raion, Estonian SSR; died Oct. 7, 1970, in Tartu. Soviet state and party official; member of the CPSU from 1926.

Müürisepp, the son of a sailor, graduated from the Tomsk Electromechanical Institute of Railroad Transport in 1937. He began working for the Enisei River Steamship Line in 1918, served in the Red Army from 1924 to 1926, carried out soviet and trade union duties from 1926 to 1931, and had a position connected with railroad transport from 1937. Assigned to the apparatus of the Central Committee of the Estonian Communist Party (Bolshevik) from 1945 to 1949, Müürisepp was a Central Committee secretary in 1948–49, vice-chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Estonian SSR from 1949 to 1951, chairman of that body from 1951 to 1961, and chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Estonian SSR and vice-chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR from 1961.

Müürisepp was elected a candidate member of the Central Committee of the CPSU at the Nineteenth through Twenty-second Party Congresses and a member of the Central Auditing Commission of the CPSU at the Twenty-third Party Congress. He was a deputy to the fourth through seventh convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Müürisepp was awarded four Orders of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
