A cache coherency protocol where each cache line is marked with one of the four states.

The MESI protocol is used by the Pentium processor.

The five-state MOESI protocol extends the functionality of the standard MESI protocol to permit one processor to access modified data from the other processor's cache.
To ensure that a read always returns the latest data, the bus implements the standard MESI protocol to maintain complete data and I/O coherence.
