meta One definition of this Greek word is transcending, or going above and beyond. In the computer field, it defines things that embrace more than the usual. Meta a department in central Colombia. Area, 85,800 sq km; population, 260,000 (1971). The administrative center is Villavicencio. The department is located on a plateau bounded in the west by the Cordillera Oriental and in the north and south by the Meta and Guaviare rivers. Livestock raising in pastures predominates. There are coal deposits near Villavicencio. Meta a river in Colombia (its lower course forms the Venezuelan border), a left tributary of the Orinoco River. The Meta River is more than 1,000 km long and drains an area of 104,000 sq km. The river’s numerous sources rise on the eastern slopes of the Cordillera Oriental and flow onto the Orinoco llanos, where they form the Meta. During the summer there is severe flooding. The average discharge is 2,500 cu m per sec. The river is navigable from its mouth to the village of Marayal (below the city of Puerto Lopez) and higher, in the flat sections of the sources of the Guatiquia and Guayuriba rivers.
