MLC
(MultiLevel Cell) A flash memory technology that stores more than one bit per cell. Traditional flash memory defines the two states of one bit (0 or 1) based on a single voltage threshold, known as a "single level cell" (SLC). Multiple bits can be achieved by being able to store and detect multiple voltage levels (see below). See StrataFlash.

  Single Level Cell (SLC)
  Two Voltages = One Bit
          0
          1

  MultiLevel Cell (MLC)
  Four Voltages = Two Bits

         11

  MultiLevel Cell (MLC)
  Eight Voltages = Three Bits

lt;p>Micron said that by using its 34-nanometer lithography technology to increase density, it has also been able to increase write performance -- or the number of writes/erase cycles that can be sustained over the flash memory's life -- six-fold on its MLC product and three-fold on the SLC flash memory.
The new standard allows an organization flexibility in the way it chooses to document its quality management system," said Akwasi Edusei, AOAP MLC quality management representative, "and it enables each individual organization to develop the minimum amount of documentation needed in order to demonstrate the effective planning, operation and control of it[s] processes and the implementation and continual improvement of the effectiveness of its QMS [quality management system].
