(compression, standard, algorithm, file format)MPEG-2 - A variant of the MPEG video and audio compression algorithm and file format, optimised for broadcast quality video. MPEG-2 was designed to transmit images using progressive coding at 4 Mbps or higher for use in broadcast digital TV and DVD. An MPEG-2 player can handle MPEG-1 data as well.

MPEG-2 has been approved as International Standard IS-13818.

DENVER -- MPEG LA announced today that Harvard International plc and the Harvard Group of companies ("Harvard"), previously called Alba plc, have become Licensees to several MPEG LA programs, including the MPEG-2 Patent Portfolio License.
MPEG LA's initial licensing program for MPEG-2 digital video compression helped produce the most widely employed standard in consumer electronics history, and the MPEG LA[R] Licensing Model has become the template for addressing other technologies.
DENVER -- MPEG LA, LLC, world leader in alternative one-stop patent licenses, today announced that several patent holders in MPEG LA's MPEG-2 Patent Portfolio License have filed separate patent enforcement actions in District Court Dusseldorf, Germany against Medion AG ("Medion") for infringing patents essential to the MPEG-2 digital video compression standard used worldwide in digital television broadcasting and DVD.
