Maanselkä
a ridge of low mountains and uplands in Fennoscandia, in northern and eastern Finland and partially in northern Norway and the western part of the Karelian ASSR. It is located in the central part of the Baltic Shield and forms the divide between the Baltic, White, and Barents seas. The ridge forms an arc that extends more than 750 km and is up to 75 km wide. Elevation, to 718 m (Mount Sokusti). There are numerous traces of the erosive action of ancient glaciers; morainic hills and aqueo-glacial plains are common.There are many lakes and copious rivers with rapids and weakly developed valleys. The region has marshy taiga forests; the highest sectors are treeless and covered by tundra vegetation.
