Macías Nguema Biyogo 

(before July 1973, Fernando Poo), a volcanic island in the Gulf of Guinea of the Atlantic Ocean. It is part of the country of Equatorial Guinea. Area, 2,017 sq km. Population, 80,000 (1971). Its main city is Malabo, the capital of the country. The island consists of three fused volcanic massifs. Elevation, to 3,008 m. The climate is equatorial and humid, with as much as 2,500 mm of precipitation annually. There are evergreen equatorial forests in the mountains. Plantations of cacao provide 90 percent of the cocoa beans grown in the country; there are also plantations of oil palms.
