MacLeod, Sir George

MacLeod, Sir George (məkloud`), 1895–1991, Scottish clergyman. He was educated at Oxford and, after serving in World War I, was ordained a Church of Scotland minister in 1924. Disaffected with his church's tenuous relations with its parishoners, MacLeod left his ministry in a Glasgow slum and in 1938 organized a multidenominational religious community with unemployed workers and fellow clerics on the Scottish island of Iona Iona [Irish Ioua=island] or Icolmkill [Irish,=island of Columba of the church], island (1985 est. pop. 267), 3.5 mi (5.6 km) long and 1.5 mi (2.4 km) wide, Argyll and Bute, NW Scotland, one of the Inner Hebrides.

. A pacifist dedicated to political and social involvement, MacLeod served as moderator of the Church of Scotland in 1957–58. In 1967 he was created a life peer as Baron MacLeod of Fuinary.
