Mach-Zehnder interferometer

Mach-Zehnder interferometer [′mäk ′tsān·dər ‚in·tər·fə′räm·əd·ər]
(optics)
A variation of the Michelson interferometer used mainly in measuring the spatial variation of the index of refraction of a gas; the device has two semitransparent mirrors and two wholly reflecting mirrors at alternate corners of a rectangle, and half the beam travels along each side of the rectangle. Also known as Mach refractometer.

The Maryland experiment and one of the Garching experiments involve Mach-Zehnder interferometers, devices that take an incoming light pulse from a laser, split it in two with a half-silvered mirror, send the two halves over different paths and recombine them.
At the heart of the modulator is Mach-Zehnder Interferometer
To look for single-photon interferences, the experimenters inserted into the experiment an arrangement of transparent cyrstals that makes the experiment into waht is called a Mach-Zehnder interferometer.
