Machado Y Morales, Gerardo
Born Sept. 29, 1871, in Santa Clara; died Mar. 29, 1939, in Miami, USA. Cuban statesman. In 1925, with the support of US monopolies, Machado y Morales became president of Cuba and established a harsh dictatorship. He helped strengthen the position of US monopolies in Cuba. Bloody terror against Communists and other progressive forces was combined with social demagoguery. In August 1933 the dictatorial regime was overthrown by a general strike, and Machado fled Cuba.
