Machado Y Ruiz, Manuel 

Born Aug. 29, 1874, in Seville; died JAN. 19, 1947, in Madrid. Spanish poet. Member of the Royal Academy of Language from 1938. Brother of A. Machado y Ruiz.

Machado was educated at the Institution Libre de Enseñanza in Madrid. In 1902 he published his first verse collection, The Soul, which was followed by Caprichos (1905), An Evil Poem (1909), and Cante Hondo (1912), based on motifs from Andalu-sian folklore. His refined, musical verse is devoted to traditional poetic themes—nature, love, death, and art. In collaboration with his brother, he wrote several plays in verse between 1926 and 1933, notably Juan de Mañara (1927) and Las Adelfas (1930).
