Machebeuf, Joseph Projectus (zhôzĕf` prôzhĕktüs` mäshböf`), 1812–89, French missionary in the American Southwest, a Roman Catholic priest. He was a friend and associate of Jean Baptiste Lamy Lamy, Jean Baptiste , 1814–88, Roman Catholic archbishop in the U.S. Southwest, b. France. He was ordained in 1838 and, after doing missionary work in S Ohio, was sent to New Mexico in 1850 as vicar apostolic.

He did much missionary work, establishing churches, schools, and hospitals in New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. He was made bishop of Denver in 1887.
