a woodworking machine used for transverse cutting. The cutting element may be similar to that in a band or rotary saw, or a simple blade may be used. Crosscut band saws are used to cut unfinished materials required for the manufacture of furniture, models, and similar items. Crosscut blade saws are used to cut window moldings, furniture frames, and single-ply facings for veneers. Rotary crosscut saws are the most common type. They are constructed with the rotary blade positioned above or below the workpiece. Depending on the design of the saw, the workpiece may be fed to the blade continuously, or it may be fastened in the required position, sawed, and then removed.

Blade diameters for rotary crosscut saws are 0.1–3 m. The saws are capable of handling workpieces 0.01–1.2 m thick and 0.1–40 m long. Motors for crosscut saws have power outputs ranging from 0.2 to 80 kilowatts per blade. The saws may weigh as much as 10 tons.
