Machine Science, Institute of
(full name, Scientific Research Institute of Machine Science), an institute that specializes in solving general problems of the theory of machines and of automation in machine building, and also problems of strength and wear resistance of machines. Established in Moscow in 1938 as part of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. The main research trends at the Institute of Machine Science are the theory of machines and mechanisms, strength of machine parts, friction and wear in machines, and the theory of techno-logical processes. There are resident and correspondence graduate schools. The institute confers doctoral and candidate’s degrees.
