Mac mini
(redirected from Macintosh mini)

Mac mini
The smallest, lightest and least expensive Mac desktop computer. Housed in a case 6.5 x 6.5 x 2", it takes up hardly any space on the desktop, but is a full-fledged Mac with a built-in optical drive and remote control. The monitor, keyboard and mouse are extra cost items.

The first minis came out in 2005 with PowerPC G4 processors. In early 2006, Intel-based minis were introduced. See Macintosh models and Macintosh.

The Mini's Predecessor
In 2000, Apple introduced the G4 Cube, which looks like a larger version of the mini. Small, slick and self-contained, the G4 Cube was not priced low, and although it won several design awards, it had problems. The on/off switch was too easily activated, and the top air vent was in a bad place. If covered with a book, the unit would overheat and shut down. Apple pulled the product a year later.
