Mackendrick, Paul (Lachlan) (1914– ) classicist; born in Taunton, Mass. He was educated at Harvard (B.A. 1934; M.A. 1937; Ph.D. 1938) and taught at the University of Wisconsin (1946–84). He became widely known for a series of books—The Mute Stones Speak (1960), The Greek Stones Speak (1962), Roman France (1972), The Dacian Stones Speak (1975), The North African Stones Speak (1980)—that were popular introductions to the archaeology of specific regions.
