Madira Bickel Mound State Archeological Site Location: Approximately 1.5 miles off US 19 , in Palmetto; entrance is about 1 mile south of I-275. Facilities: Under development. Picnic tables are available now; nature trails and kiosks with historical information are planned. Activities: Picnicking. Special Features: Site was the first in Florida to be designated a State Archeological Site, in 1948. The flat-topped ceremonial mound is composed of sand, shell, and village debris and is 20 feet high. Excavations have disclosed at least three periods of Native American cultures, with the earliest dating back 2,000 years.
