Madona 

(Birži until 1926), a city and administrative center of Madona Raion, Latvian SSR, located in the southeastern part of the Vidzemes Upland. Madona has a railroad station on the Gulbene-Plavinas line, 148 km east of Riga. The local industry is metalworking. Madona has a museum of local lore.
