Maeshowe or Maes Howe (mās`hou), prehistoric monument, on Pomona in the Orkney Islands, off N Scotland, near Stenness. A passage grave with a corbeled vault, it measures 115 ft (35 m) in diameter and 23 ft (7 m) high. It dates to the early 3d millennium B.C. A runic inscription on the wall records a 12th-century Viking visit.
