Essaouira (ĕsəwēr`ə), city, W Morocco, on the Atlantic Ocean. It was founded in 1760 by Sultan Muhammad ibn-Abdullah. In 1844 the French bombarded the city to force Morocco to stop supporting Abd al-Kadir, leader of an Algerian resistance movement. The city declined when Agadir Agadir , city (1994 pop. 155,244), SW Morocco, on the Atlantic Ocean. Agadir has metal-processing industries and exports fruit and vegetables. Essaouira 

(formerly Mogador), a city in Morocco. Population, 30,100 (1971). Essaouira is a port on the Atlantic Ocean. Industry is represented by food processing (primarily fish canning), metalworking, and the production of leather goods. Handicrafts include jewelry-making and the production of copper ware. The city exports fish products, olive oil, wool, and cereals. Oil and natural gas deposits are located near Essaouira.
