Magelang 

a city in the province of Central Java, Indonesia, in a mountain valley between the peaks of Sumbing and Merapi. Population, 110,300 (1971). Magelang is the commercial center of an agricultural region which produces sugar, rice, tobacco, and cassava. There are also textile and food-processing enterprises.

The local administration in Magelang regency in Central Java Province earlier said there had been 11,500 villagers taking shelter in evacuation centers outside the danger zone in the province.
The government of nearby Magelang district mobilised more than 40 trucks and cars to evacuate about 11,000 villagers from three sub-districts near the foot of the mountain, said Edy Susanto, a district official.
