(microbiology)
A group of bacteria containing iron mineral crystals in intracellular structures, called magnetosomes, which enable the bacteria to orient and migrate along magnetic field lines.

The researchers focused their study on magnetotactic bacteria, which contain chains of magnetic crystals, called magnetosomes.
At the same time, other bacteria convert sulfur compounds in the lower layers into sulfides, which are toxic to most life, but important raw material that magnetotactic bacteria use to make greigite.
Such magnetotactic bacteria typically live between the high-oxygen surface and low-oxygen floor of ponds or sediments.
