Magstar MP

    0.01 sec.
Magstar MP
(Magstar MultiPurpose) A magnetic tape technology from IBM for midrange systems. Except for the use of linear recording, Magstar MP is completely different than the Magstar line. It uses a 5GB cassette-style cartridge rather than a single-hub unit, and it uses 8mm tape rather than half inch. The Magstar MP cartridge was especially designed for picking in a robotic library. Instead of at the beginning, the starting point is in the middle of the tape for faster retrieval. See magnetic tape.

Magstar Cartridges
Magstar MP and Magstar are very different tape technologies. Magstar uses a half-inch, single-hub cartridge, while Magstar MP uses an 8mm cassette-style cartridge that starts in the middle for faster retrieval. Both use linear recording.
