Maia (mā`ə, mī`ə).
1 In Greek mythology, oldest of the Pleiades Pleiades, in Greek mythology, seven daughters of Atlas and the nymph Pleione. According to one legend they were the attendants of Artemis and were changed into stars by the gods when they were pursued by the amorous hunter Orion. 2 In Roman mythology, goddess of fertility; also called Maiesta. She was often identified with Bona Dea Bona Dea , in Roman religion, ancient fertility goddess worshiped only by women; also called Fauna. She was said to be the daughter, sister, or wife of Faunus. No man could be present at her annual festival in May. Maia a mountain range in Khabarovsk Krai, RSFSR. It extends for 200 km along the drainage divide of the Uda River (Sea of Okhotsk basin) and its left tributary, the Maia River. Elevation, 1,983 m. The range is composed of metamorphic rocks and granites, and in the southeast, of effusive rocks and their tuffs. The Maia Range is deeply dissected by valleys. Spruce-fir and larch taiga grows on the slopes at elevations to 1,000 m; higher up there is a zone of dwarf stone pine and mountain tundras. Maia a river in Khabarovsk Krai and the Yakut ASSR, a right tributary of the Aldan River (Lena Basin). Length, 1,053 km; basin area, 171,000 sq km. Its sources are the Pravaia and Levaia Maia, and it flows mainly within the borders of the ludoma-Maia upland. Along the upper and middle course the valley is broad and swampy; along the lower course it is more narrow. The river’s feeding is mixed. The average water flow is 1,180 cu m per sec. High water is from May through September. It freezes in the second half of October and thaws in May. The ludoma is a large right tributary. The Maia is navigable for about 500 km from the estuary. During the second half of the 17th century the route from Yakutsk to the Sea of Okhotsk followed the Maia valley. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
