Maiden’s Tower

(in Azerbaijani, Kyz-kalasy, Gyzgalasy), a landmark of medieval Azerbaijani architecture in Baku (12th century; architect Masud, son of Davud). The Maiden’s Tower is cylindrical and has an enormous capacity (inside, it has eight floors; the height is 27 m, and the thickness of the walls at the base is 5 m), with a huge projection on the eastern side. It is made of limestone; horizontal rows of stone alternately jut out and recede, giving the facade a unique ribbed appearance.
