Chiburdanidze, Maiia Grigor’evna
Born Jan. 17, 1961, in Kutaisi. Soviet chess player. International grandmaster (1977); Honored Master of Sport (1978). Chiburdanidze is a student at the Tbilisi Medical Institute (1978). She was women’s champion of the USSR in 1977 and became women’s world champion in 1978, after winning a match with N. T. Gaprindashvili. She won international women’s tournaments in Brasov, Rumania, in 1974 and in Tbilisi in 1976. She headed the Soviet teams that won the Eighth and Ninth Women’s Chess Olympiads in 1978 and 1980.
