Internet email is based on SMTP, which describes the interaction between Mail Transfer Agents (MTAs), which are responsible for carrying messages to and from hosts on the networks, and Mail User Agents (MUAs), which are simply the email clients, such as Eudora or Outlook, that people use to compose and send email.
Formed in November 2002 to fight spam while protecting the delivery of legitimate email, the ESPC boasts a membership comprising many of the brightest and most innovative minds in the email industry, including Email Service Providers, Mail Transfer Agents, Internet Service Providers, application and solution developers, and deliverability solutions providers.
Most enterprises, service providers and independent software vendors (ISVs) develop custom software for dynamic content, message tracking and infrastructure administration and rely on freeware-based Mail Transfer Agents (MTA) for message delivery.
