Maiorov, Aleksandr Mikhailovich 

Born Sept. 13, 1920, in the village of Pokurlei, in what is now Vol’sk Raion, Saratov Oblast. Soviet military commander. General of the army (1977). Member of the CPSU since 1943.

Maiorov joined the Soviet Army in September 1940. He graduated from the Zlatoust Military Engineering School in 1941, the M. V. Frunze Military Academy in 1951, and the Military Academy of the General Staff in 1963. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45 he served as deputy commander and commander of a sapper company and as division engineer of the 8th Guards Cavalry Division on the Voronezh, Western, and First and Second Ukrainian fronts. He fought in the liberation of Hungary and Czechoslovakia. After the war, Maiorov held various command and staff positions. He was named commander of the Central Group of Forces in October 1968, and in July 1972 he took command of the Baltic Military District.

Maiorov became a candidate member of the Central Committee of the CPSU in April 1971 and was a deputy to the eighth and ninth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, three Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of the Patriotic War First Class, the Order of Alexander Nevsky, three Orders of the Red Star, and various medals. He has also received various foreign orders and medals.
