Makarevskii, Aleksandr Ivanovich
Born Apr. 3 (16), 1904, in the village of Mushkovichi, Dukhovshchina Raion, Smolensk Oblast. Soviet aircraft construction scientist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1968; corresponding member, 1953); Hero of Socialist Labor (1957). Member of the CPSU since 1943. Makarevskii graduated from the N. E. Bauman Moscow Higher Technical School in 1929. In 1927 he began working at the Central Aerohydrodynamics Institute. He was head of the institute from 1950 to 1960. From 1952 he was also a professor at the Moscow Physicotechnical Institute. Makarevskii’s works on the external loads on aircraft have served as a foundation for the establishment of strength norms for domestic aircraft, particularly for travel at high speeds. He has also studied the effects of stability and maneuverability on overload. Makarevskii has been awarded the Lenin Prize, the State Prize of the USSR, three Orders of Lenin, three other orders, and various medals.
