Makart, Hans (häns mä`kärt), 1840–84, Austrian history painter, studied with Karl von Piloty Piloty, Karl von , 1826–86, German historical painter; son of Ferdinand Piloty (1786–1844), a noted German lithographer. Karl first won recognition for his genre paintings, such as The Nurse (1853).

In his large history paintings he strove to emulate Titian and Veronese in the use of lush color. Characteristic of his glittering costume pieces is Entry of Charles V into Antwerp (1878, Hamburg).
