Makowski, Józef Tadeusz

    0.03 sec.
Makowski, Józef Tadeusz

Born Jan. 29, 1882, in Oswi£cim, in Kraków Województwo; died Nov. 1, 1932, in Paris. Polish painter.

Makowski studied at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts with J. Stanislawski and J. Mehoffer from 1903 to 1908 and with A. Le Fauconnier in Paris in 1908. He lived for the most part in France, where he came under the influence of primitivism and cubism. Often painting children, at work and play, and the world as seen through their eyes, Makowski sought to evoke the naive simplicity and vivid colors of children’s art. Among his best works are Children and Lanterns (c. 1928) at the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris and The Shoemaker (1930) and The Miser (1932), both at the National Museum in Warsaw.
