Maksud, Makhmud Gisamutdinovich 

(also M. G. Maksudov). Born Jan. 2 (15), 1900, in the village of Verkhnie Kibia-Kozi, present-day Sabinskii Raion, Tatar ASSR; died Nov. 10, 1962, in Moscow. Soviet Tatar writer. Member of the CPSU (1919).

Maksud graduated from the Communist University of Workers of the East. He saw service in the Civil War of 1918-20 and the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45. Maksud began to publish in 1918. He wrote poetry and essays and was a master of lyrical sketches. He wrote about Soviet people living as one family of fraternal nations: The New City and Its People (1949), Our Furriers (1952), and On the Peace Watch (1955). Maksud’s book Precious Minutes, his reminiscences of Musa Dzhalil’, was published posthumously in 1963. He translated the works of A. S. Pushkin, L. N. Tolstoi, N. A. Nekrasov, H. Heine, and J. W. Goethe into Tatar. Maksud was awarded two orders.
