Malegaon (mälā`goun), town (1991 pop. 342,431), Maharashtra state, W central India, at the confluence of the Girna and Masam rivers. It is a weaving center for saris and a market for agricultural products. Malegaon was formerly a military post and is now a district administrative center. It was captured by the British in 1818 during the war with the Pindaris, marauding tribes of landless and casteless men who were often mercenaries of Maratha leaders. |
