Malkov, Pavel Dmitrievich

Mal’kov, Pavel Dmitrievich 

Born Nov. 17, 1887, in the settlement of Kukarka, now the city of Sovetsk, Kirov Oblast; died Nov. 22, 1965, in Moscow. Russian revolutionary. Member of the Communist Party from 1904. Son of a peasant.

Mal’kov was a worker. He was a participant in the Revolution of 1905-07. In 1910 he joined the Baltic Fleet, where he was a member of the underground Bolshevik organization. After the February Revolution of 1917, he was a member of the Helsingfors Committee of the RSDLP and a member of the Central Committee of the Baltic Fleet (Tsentrobalt). In October 1917 he commanded a detachment of sailors and took part in the storming of the Winter Palace. On Oct. 29 (Nov. 11), 1917, he became the first commandant of Smol’nyi. In March 1918 he became commandant of the Moscow Kremlin. From 1920 to 1922 he served in the Red Army. In 1923, Mal’kov was transferred to economic managerial work. He retired with a special pension in 1954. Mal’kov was a member of three convocations of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee. He was the author of the memoirs Notes of a Commandant of the Moscow Kremlin (1959) and Under the Banner of the Soviets (1957). He was awarded the Order of Lenin.
