Malmesbury (mämz`bərē), town (1991 pop. 2,552), Wiltshire, S England. Agricultural and electrical engineering are important to the local economy. Malmesbury is famous for its Benedictine abbey, founded in the 12th cent., of which only the nave remains. King Athelstan Athelstan or Æthelstan , d. 939, king of Wessex (924–39), son and successor of Edward the Elder. After coming to the throne, he vigorously built up his kingdom on the foundations established by his grandfather Alfred.
