(neuroscience)
Either of two small, spherical masses of gray matter at the base of the brain in the space between the hypophysis and oculomotor nerve, which receive and relay olfactory impulses.

46) Magnetic resonance imaging is used to support the diagnosis by demonstrating high-intensity lesions in the paraventricular regions of the thalamus, hypothalamus, mamillary bodies, periaqueductal region of the midbrain, fourth ventricular floor, and superior cerebellar vermis.
Autopsy showed a small focus of perivascular lymphocyte cuffing in the mamillary bodies of the brain, consistent with viral encephalitis.
Memory processes occur throughout most of the brain (striped area) but certain areas within and bordering on the limbic system - notably the hippocampus and mamillary bodies - appear indispensable to memory.
