Managarov, Ivan Mefod’evich 

Born May 31 (June 12), 1898, in Enakievo, now in Donetsk Oblast. Soviet military leader; colonel general (1945); Hero of the Soviet Union (Apr. 28, 1945). Member of the CPSU from 1919.

Managarov entered the Red Army in 1918. He participated in the Civil War of 1918-20 as assistant commander and commander of a regiment. In 1931 he graduated from the Military Political Academy and in 1947 completed the Higher Academic Training Courses. Between 1931 and 1941 he was commander of a cavalry regiment and a cavalry division. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45 he commanded a cavalry division and rifle and cavalry corps as part of the Far Eastern Front; then from 1942 he participated in combat actions on the Briansk, Kalinin, Northwestern, Steppe, Second Ukrainian, and Transbaikal fronts as cavalry corps commander (1942) and commander of the Forty-first and Fifty-third armies (1942-45). After the Great Patriotic War he continued in command posts. He entered the reserve in 1953. He was awarded two Orders of Lenin, three Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Suvorov First Class, the Order of Kutuzov First Class, the Order of Bogdan Khmel’nitskii First Class, the Order of the Red Star, five foreign orders, and various medals.
