On central Gulf coast, south of Tampa; organized Jan 9, 1855 from Hillsborough County. Name Origin: For the manatee, or sea cow, an endangered aquatic mammal found in the local waterways.

Pop 2005: 306,779. State rank: 16. Pop change: 2000-20005 16.20%; 1990-2000 24.70%. Pop 2000: 264,002 (White 80.60%; Black or African American 8.20%; Hispanic or Latino 9.30%; Asian 0.90%; Other 4.60%). Foreign born: 8.40%. Median age: 43.60.
