a department in northwestern France, in a hilly area on the Cotentin Peninsula. Area, 6,400 sq km; population, 453,-000 (1971). The administrative center is St. Lô. The department is a livestock-raising region; 65 percent of the territory is in pasture (the Manche Department is first in the country in the number of cattle; horses, swine, and sheep are also raised). Orchards (for the production of apple cider) and fishing are important. The main port and shipbuilding center is Cherbourg.
